Video DVD Disc Repair / Video DVD Recovery
We are going to try a different approach for video DVD disc repair because we want to try to keep the video file and folder structure intact if possible. This will give us he best chance to repair the DVD disc contents without losing anything like menus etc.
Open Nero 10 StartSmart and choose to run “Recode.” This is an interesting module in Nero that has some unusual abilities that it wasn’t really designed for! So we are going to trick it into doing something for us!
With the bad video DVD disc already loaded in the DVD tray and “Recode” open, select “Recode an Entire DVD to DVD.”
A new window will open and we need to check off some things here.
On the top tab make sure that “DVD Video Files” is selected.
On the bottom right hand side make sure that “Fit to target” is checked.
Below that is a box showing the disc size of the “target” so make sure it is the same as the disc you have loaded.
The actual purpose of Recode is to… well… re-code! It is used to reduce the size of video DVDs and video files to fit more on to a DVD disc. In this case we are tricking it into “re-coding,” for example, a 4.7 gig disc into a 4.7gig disc! By doing this we will get Recode to process the video data on the disc without altering the quality.
If you are lucky the result of this processing will be a fully repaired DVD video file structure now sitting on your hard drive.
Now select “Import DVD,” navigate to the disc in your DVD tray and import. Recode will now copy the contents of the disc across to the hard drive. It will place those contents into a folder in your “my Documents” folder called “Recode.”
Note: DVD discs are pretty cheap these days so make sure you have a few spare ones when embarking on a DVD disc repair project like this. The only way you can be certain that you have totally corrected the DVD is if you burn a new disc and test it.
Now that you have the “Recode” folder in “My Documents” close the “Recode” program. This will take you back to the Nero 10 ( ) “SmartStart” window.
Leave “StartSmart” open for the moment and in Windows navigate to the newly created “Recode” folder in “My Documents.” Click on the “recode” folder to change the name of the folder.
Change the name to VIDEO_TS EXACTLY as I have typed it there. All capitals and using the underscore between the VIDEO and the TS.
Now go back to Nero 10 “StartSmart” and select to open “Nero Express.” Then select to burn “DVD Video Files.” A navigation window will open. Navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder you created in the previous step and select that. Then let Nero 9 burn a new DVD.
Test the DVD. If you are lucky Recode has corrected the problem automatically and you are done.
If not, then go to this FixVTS tutorial and run the VIDEO_TS folder you already have through that, burn a new disc and test again.
Still here! Not to worry, we have a few DVD disc repair tricks up our sleeves yet!
DVDFab
There is another DVD copying and conversion software suitable for DVD disc repair. Although it is not purpose built for this task it’s superior reading abilities are particularly suited to DVD disc repairs.
The name is DVDFab. You can just click on the name text or image to download the free trial.
The procedure for DVD disc repair is exactly the same. Load the damaged or faulty DVD disc into the DVD tray of your computer. With DVDFab simply choose the straight DVD to DVD copy option and let it run.
The resulting file and subsequent copy will either have been corrected automatically upon importing or not. It is as simple as that. The program has built in DVD correction features.
If DVDFab fails to automatically correct the DVD then we have to face two realities.
- Boy! This is a SERIOUSLY messed up DVD!
- We have almost run out of DVD disc repair options.
So if you are still here and still persisting then congratulations! You may not have effected a DVD Disc Repair but you have certainly done well to remain sane up to this point… or maybe not! Click on the link below to keep going with your DVD Disc repair.
